Marketing is a critical business function responsible for attracting customers. It communicates the value of a service or product to the customer in hopes of obtaining their business. It can be seen as an organizational occupation and a set of processes for communicating, delivering, and creating value to customers and managing these relationships in a way that is beneficial to the company. Marketing acts as the link between our society’s material requirements and its economic response.

Program Information

The University of Wisconsin has an excellent marketing program. In order to declare a major in marketing, a student must be admitted to the Wisconsin School of Business. All students who wish to major in marketing must take Marketing 300 since it is a core business course and a prerequisite to all other undergraduate marketing courses. The marketing major consists of 3 mandatory marketing courses plus 3 elective marketing courses, and they can be taken in any order. There are 3 potential marketing course work and career tracks: Retailing and Wholesaling, Product/Brand Management, and Sales Management. There are elective courses specifically designed for each track. The University of Pennsylvania’s marketing program at the Wharton School is one of the top programs in the country. The Marketing Concentration is the main undergraduate program offered by the department. The department also offers a joint concentration: Marketing and Operations Management, and a dual concentration: Marketing and Communications. Students pursuing the Marketing Concentration will acquire a solid grounding in applying the basic disciplines essential for developing excellent marketing strategies, understanding organizational and consumer buying patterns. They will also acquire practical experience applying these methods and concepts via half semester course.

A marketing degree is also a business degree, meaning you will be able to apply for any job that requires a business degree. Programs are tailored to give you a broad education, which can be useful for careers in many different fields. Marketing majors also gain a strong knowledge of consumer psychology, and are a step ahead of most people in knowing what the customer is thinking and what they want. This is a valuable skill to any business career. A marketing degree also provides excellent communication experience, which is an important skill that employers look for, regardless of the profession. It can be difficult to gain experience while you study however, since few schools offer internships. Thus, you will have to gain experience on your own .Since bachelor’s programs are broad and rather general, you may have to attend graduate school or learn about specific industries on your own. Entry level jobs may be very competitive, especially for people who only have a bachelor’s degree.

Graduate School & Career

Since most careers do not require any form of graduate school, many people enter the industry with just a bachelor’s degree. They may find a career in Sales and Brand Management. A career in this field gives you many hands-on opportunities, and common job titles include brand manager, national sales manager, and product manager. Another popular field is advertising. Careers in advertising include account executives and promotions managers. An account executive at an advertising agency manages client accounts to make sure their needs and demands are met throughout the advertising campaign. Marketing majors may also find a career in merchandising, such as merchandise managers or buyers. They maintain inventory for a business while striving to keep their goals and reputation intact.
